What is memory tourism?

Traveling can also be a way to understand history. "Memory tourism" stems precisely from this idea: visiting places marked by significant events—not merely as stops on an itinerary, but as spaces capable of preserving stories, prompting reflection, and broadening our understanding of the past.

Unlike traditional tourism, where the experience is often built around attractions and snapshots, a journey of remembrance demands a different pace. It requires context to understand what happened, knowledge to interpret what lies before us, and—above all—sensitivity to recognize the significance that certain places hold.

When we speak of Holocaust remembrance, this responsibility becomes even greater. Museums, memorials, former Jewish quarters, synagogues, camps, and so many other places preserve fragments of individual and collective histories that cannot simply be reduced to tourist attractions.

That is why Shoresh believes in experiences grounded in historical rigor, respect, and time for reflection. The itineraries are designed for small groups of up to 12 people, allowing for closer interaction with the guides and creating space to understand and process each experience.

Traveling to these places also means recognizing the importance of preserving memory. Because some journeys introduce us to new destinations, while others transform the way we view stories we already knew.
